THE ARCHIVE episodes

THE ARCHIVE aspires to become a dynamic meeting point for creative people in the city of

Thessaloniki. Through a series of events called THE ARCHIVE EPISODES, showcases will be

programmed throughout the year. THE ARCHIVE EPISODES will keep in touch with Greek and

international developments in architecture and design and display them at THE ARCHIVE.

EPISODE 03:
Supersurfaces

FINALINVITATIONEPISODE03

Opening: Friday, 11.12.09 20:00
12.12.09 – 17.01.10 (access for members only)

The third architectural event that will take place in The Archive
presents the research work of the design studio supersurfaces, which Sophia Vyzoviti teaches at the School of Architecture, University of Thessaly.

Supersurfaces, comprises experimental morphogenetic research that focuses on processes of continuous surface transformations. Conceptually defined within the ontology of the fold it activates topological and computational thinking and finds here applicability in a fusion design field between architecture, product and fashion design.

In the design studio supersurfaces, the challenge lies at the production of dynamic models that bear the potential to produce automatically certain topological – morphological events. According to the studio structure intuitive folding sessions precede mathematical descriptions of paper folds, resulting into prototype development.

The presentation of the research as one of the episodes becomes an installation that responds to the particular spatial qualities of The Archive. The Supersurfaces installation includes a three-dimensional paper screen that is placed on the facade as an optical filter, while the visual narrative of its production process is projected inside. In addition a collection of prototypes developed recently in the architect’s office and the academic studio is included. http://supersurfaces-supersurfaces.blogspot.com.
