The Concept

THE ARCHIVE which recently opened in Thessaloniki (Mitropoleos Street 127), is a 24/7 access library of materials, architectural solutions and decoration that will also work as an exhibition space for architecture. THE ARCHIVE is the ‘home from home’ answer to the mobile architect’s office with the professional support of CARTECO providing all sales support and supply.
THE ARCHIVE is the result of a dynamic creative team working alongside the vision of Vassilios P.Bartzokas, CEO of CARTECO. The space was designed by K&K ARCHITECTS, Katerina Kotzia and Korina Filoxenidou, while all communication design, environmental graphics and press items were designed by Greek graphics studio MNP.

The design concept is inspired by the model making process, a white folded structure that is placed inside a black orthogonal box. The space though small, is created to inspire and offer maximum flexibility of use. The materials are rough and honest, using white painted, 8mm thick OSB placed on a light metal structure with a focus on the technology available. A custom made “barcode” library – inspired by CARTECO’s logo – functions as a filter between the “inside” and the “outside”. A second “barcode” library placed in the back contains catalogues from numerous companies that specialize in architectural materials. THE ARCHIVE identity and supporting graphics follow the same design intent, honest and practical information using paper normally used for model making. THE ARCHIVE is also supported by a website (www.thearchive.gr) designed by Thessaloniki based BEETROOT DESIGN GROUP. Applicants can find more information there and also apply on-line for an entrance card.

The Space & Facilities
In a space of no more than 25 square metres, THE ARCHIVE offers architects and interior designers the necessary tools to complete their projects. A vast library of catalogues and samples from CARTECO and its collaborators; up to date publications from Greece and abroad about architecture, industrial design and graphic design; three I-mac computers with free Internet access as well as a projector connected to a computer available to the user for presentations to clients, colleagues or students. There is also a WI FI spot with free fast Internet access so that the user can connect their own computer and work there. Dock stations for I-pods are also available for those wanting their favourite music. All in all, THE ARCHIVE is a space born out of a passion and desire to support architects and designers and offer a complete 24/7 service. A pioneering idea that has its roots in servicing its valued customers and engaging with students of architecture before they graduate.
